Rehabilitation Services, B.S.

The Mission of the Rehabilitation Services Program at the University of Maine at Farmington is to provide high-quality Bachelor’s level education and advisement to students who wish to work with people with disabilities, including people with physical disabilities, intellectual and developmental disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, and addiction disorders. Students who wish to obtain the Maine State MHRT/C Certification, or the Addictions Certificate, can discuss these opportunities with their academic advisor(s). Students entering the major must have a Criminal History Record Check prior to their practicum and internship.

MHRT Option

Students majoring in Rehabilitation may elect to include coursework to become eligible for Maine state certification as a Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician (MHRT/C).  Eligibility is based on specific coursework and completion of the BS in Rehabilitation.

REH 249 Psychiatric Rehabilitation  

REH 250 Introduction to Addiction  

REH 270 Vocational Counseling and Placement  

REH 420 Trauma and Resiliency  

 

Required courses must be taken at UMF, with a minimum grade of B- required in each.  Upon graduation from the program, the transcript will reflect MHRT/C eligible.

Minimum Total Credits for The Degree: 128


*NOTE: Students who wish to change their major to Rehabilitation Services will need to have a overall GPA of 2.500 before being accepted into the major.

*NOTE: Rehabilitation students will be required to take BIO 150N - Human Anatomy and Physiology I  as one of their natural sciences.

Graduation

To graduate with a Rehabilitation Services major, students must have:

  1. Grades of B- or higher in all major requirements and MHRT/C courses;
  2. A cumulative GPA of 2.500 or higher.

Learning Goals:

The Rehabilitation Services Program will:

  1. Emphasize the individual rights of people with disabilities in all coursework.
  2. Provide quality student advisement regarding student degrees, curriculum, and career opportunities.
  3. Expose students to research-based theories and practices, with the understanding that the true experts on disability are people with disabilities themselves.
  4. Provide opportunities for students to apply knowledge and skills, and to reflect on their professional development strengths and needs.
  5. Support employers with Bachelor’s level students who meet employers’ workforce needs.
  6. Foster the development of students’ writing and research skills critical to their careers and continued education.
  7. Improve services, supports, and environments for people with disabilities through education of students in the program, and the larger public in the UMF community, state, and nation.
