POS 341 - Immigration Policy

This course examines the development, implementation, and impact of immigration policies in the United States and countries in different world regions. Students will explore the historical foundations and evolution of immigration laws, the political and economic factors shaping contemporary debates, and the human rights implications of migration policies. Key topics that will be explored first in the US include: border enforcement, refugee and asylum policies, labor migration, citizenship pathways, and the intersection of immigration with national security and public opinion. We will also consider US immigration policy in comparison with other immigration systems, highlighting different national approaches to migration. Through policy analysis, case studies, and discussion of current events impacting global migration, students will critically engage with the practical issues and ethical dilemmas surrounding immigration policymaking.
