HTY 253 - From Muhammad to Suleiman: Islamicate World in the First 1000 Years Introduction to the history of Muslim lands from the rise of Islam in the early seventh century to the peak of Ottoman power in the sixteenth century. Closer attention is paid to the Mediterranean region than to areas further east. Issues explored will include the rise of Islam, political units and disputes about political legitimacy, cultural and scientific achievements, and the significance of the Muslim world, especially the Ottomans, in the development of the early modern global order. GLOBAL CONCENTRATION.
