Early Childhood Special Education, Minor

The purpose of the Early Childhood Special Education Minor is to respond to the need for all teachers and home visitors to provide appropriate educational services and supports to young children with disabilities and their families. The Early Childhood Special Education Minor comprises 20 credits in ECS courses as described below and is open to all students. A grade of B- or higher must be achieved in all courses to complete the minor successfully.

Interested students must complete an application and submit it to the Early Childhood Special Education Department. Applicants meeting the following requirements will be considered for admission (based on enrollment capacity of the program):

  • Current GPA of at least 2.750
  • 12 earned credits
  • Interview with early childhood special education faculty member

NOTE: Courses from other institutions are not automatically equivalent for the minor.

A minimum of one third of the required credits must be earned at UMF for a minor to be awarded.

Required Courses


All ECS minors must select one of the following:

Sixteen additional credits in ECS courses. These credits may include the two courses not used to satisfy the requirement above, as well as field courses.

Minimum Total Credits for the Minor: 20
