ENG 366 - Early American Novel, 1780-1900

This course studies the rise of the novel in the United States from the Revolutionary Period to the late nineteenth century. We will consider the possibilities of the novel as a vehicle of republican ideas, investigate the initial resistance to the genre among the literary elite, and trace the sociopolitical establishment of the novel as an American genre through the nineteenth century. Authors may include, but are not limited to, Susanna Rowson, Charles Brockden Brown, Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, Lydia Maria Child, Catherine Maria Sedgwick, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Louise May Alcott, and William Dean Howells. Note: This course is not a Humanities distribution. Pass/Fail: Pass/Fail option Course Typically Offered: Every 2 years.

Prerequisite(s): One 200-level ENG literature course.
