Return to: Academic Programs
The Creative Writing Certificate offers students the opportunity to work in an intensive format with faculty who are practicing writers in workshop-style classes to discover and develop their writing strengths in the genres of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Small classes, an emphasis on individual conferencing, and the development of a writing portfolio allow students to see themselves as artists and refine their writing.

Total Credits for the Certificate: 12
One-year Program:
- Three courses in Creative Writing at the 300-level or higher (9 credits). Possible courses include ENG 310 , ENG 311 , ENG 312 , and ENG 314 . ENG 215 , ENG 218 , or ENG 219 can be substituted for one 300-level workshop at the discretion of the Program Director.
- ENG 415 Writing Certificate Capstone (3 credits): The course is the culmination of a student’s Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Creative Writing. Working one-on-one with a Creative Writing Faculty member, students will produce a complete professional and publishable manuscript of their creative work: approximately 50 pages of either poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, screenwriting, or a hybrid mixed-genre manuscript.
Portfolio of Writings
Post-Baccalaureate students will develop a portfolio of writings for applying to graduate schools or for personal or professional development.
